“Quality comes first” - siba opts for Star Proof.

German Flexo service provider focuses on superior halftone dot reproduction

London (England), December 5th, 2011 - siba, a young and dynamic flexographic service provider in Lörrach, Germany has installed a Star Proof/Epson inkjet proofing system to ensure their customers receive the highest quality print simulation.

The company, which was founded in November 2010 by industry experts Mathias Buergin, Ralph Simon and Jörg Ambrosius has been successfully driven through it’s start-up phase. Today, siba employs a staff of 12 and services renowned German, French and Swiss flexographic printing companies involved in the manufacture of labels, packaging inserts, flexible packaging and pharmaceutical capsules.

“From the outset, our aim has been to provide our customers with the highest quality solutions - we chose industry leaders for our CTP engine and our plate offering” offers Mathias. “The decision to choose Star Proof as our proofing solution was based on the softwares’ ability to replicate the halftone dot on the proof. The Len files created on our Rip are processed by Star Proof, with the resultant inkjet proof faithfully reproducing the original dot shape, trapping, pull-backs and overprints, irrespective of resolution or screen ruling - their are no limitations.”

The installation which was carried out by Graphic Republik, has allowed siba to create individual colour profiles for all printing situations, even for specific printing substrates and colours. This ensures that each customer can be certain that they are receiving customised, fingerprinted proofs which resembles their print set-up.

Star Proof accepts Raster data in 1 Bit Tiff or Barco “Len” file formats at resolutions up to 4,000 dpi, screen rulings up to 223 lpi and support for the latest HD and NX Flexo screening technologies. The resultant data integral proof sets high standards in halftone inkjet proofing.

Used in conjunction with the Epson Stylus Pro range of inkjet printers, Star Proof gives users the ability to produce samples, prototypes and final proofs which are representative of the actual printed article. To fully compliment Epson ClearProof Film™ and Metallic film™, Star Proof also gives full control over white ink density and hue, allowing adjustments to be made simply and quickly. Reverse print and surface print modes are also fully supported.

MaxPro wins Flexotech 2011 International Prepress innovation awardef

Multi colour conversion solution scoops 1st prize

London (England), October 21st, 2011 - MaxColor, the latest development in the MaxPro suite of Prepress applications has won the Prepress innovation category for the Flexotech International awards 2011. The ceremony, which was held at the London Hilton Metropole on the 19th October is one of the most prestigious international events and is sponsored by leading companies in the industry.

Speaking after the presentation, Steve Donegan of Graphic Republik said “We are delighted to receive such an accolade from such a respected source. As a young company, being shortlisted in a category with established industry players, yet winning the prize for Prepress innovation, is a proud and significant moment”.

MaxColor, which was competing in a group with products from Idealliance and EskoArtwork, is an option within the MaxPro suite of applications that has been developed to help reduce the amount of inks/print stations used on press by changing/replacing existing colours. The overall benefits include increased image colour vibrancy, lower ink usage and better registration (due to reduced print stations).

“MaxColor is just one of the true, innovative products within the MaxPro range. It is significant not only because of it’s ease of use and cost saving features” said Steve Donegan, “but as the judges highlighted, from the impact the savings can have from an environmental point of view. It has wide market appeal, with users such as brand owners and Prepress trade shops through to Flexo and Digital printers.

MaxColor offers the following features:

1) Internal colour conversion via MaxColor Profile - Unlike ICC profiles, MaxColor profiles are generated from industry standard colour libraries (e.g. Pantone) or custom spot colours, using the LAB values as reference. The resultant MaxColor profile is used to convert a) RGB/CMYK Tiff images or b) MaxPro files which can include text as well as images. In the case of MaxPro files, the user has the choice of whether to convert image only, text only or both.

2) Post conversion editing - Once the file has been converted, MaxColor provides tools for image enhancement via individual separation curves and individual or colour combination selective editing. A colour meter tool allows the user to monitor changes made and a comparison image feature provides a before/after view.

3) Monitor Calibration, Display profile and Display Dot Gain Curve - MaxColor provides an integral monitor calibration process which has been designed to more accurately reproduce both CMYK and Spot colour rendition when compared to standard ICC profiles. It enables different press/material/ink characteristics to be shown on-screen in the form of a Dot Gain Curve library which can be changed on-the-fly, without the need to re-calibrate. This feature also accepts Star Proof calibration chart readings allowing users to import Star Proof calibration curves with ink hue and dot gain information.

4) Colour Library - MaxPro/MaxColor allows users to import multiple colour libraries for use in colour conversion and on-screen viewing. Custom Spot colours such as those created from ink draw-downs on different materials can also be imported to assist in accurate on-screen colour rendition.

A Silver Metallic Pro option was also shortlisted in the Prepress innovation category. Silver Metallic Pro is an option to MaxPro, developed to automatically produce special White Ink separations for printing on Metallic foil or board. Once images are converted, an on-screen Metallic View feature enables the user to check the result while adjusting the light reflection intensity and angle to simulate the print ink and material combinations.

efStar Proof extends its Flexographic
credentials

Amcor Ledbury invest in halftone proofing with white ink & multi substrates.

London (England), October 4th 2011 - Amcor Ledbury have invested in a Star Proof and Epson Stylus Pro WT7900 solution to bring high quality proofing in-house.

The system which was installed in early 2011 produces colour accurate halftone proof samples for both customer and internal print requirements. The integration which was carried out by Graphic Republik, accurately replicates on the proof how the final printed piece will look.

When used in conjunction with Star Proof, the Epson Stylus Pro WT7900 is capable of producing the highest quality halftone proofs from the same ripped data that is used to make the final press plate. Utilizing the WT7900’s White ink and ClearProof film combination, Star Proof is calibrated to produce a halftone proof of the press condition from colour and ink sequence through to ink hue, white opacity and dot gain.

Commenting on the investment, John Guthrie, Reprographics Manager said “Star Proofs are now an almost daily requirement for our print work and our customers - when producing samples of technically demanding work, Star Proof continues to over-deliver more than I would have dared to believe”.

Star Proof accepts Raster data in 1 Bit Tiff or Barco “Len” file formats at resolutions up to 4,000 dpi, screen rulings up to 223 lpi and supports the latest HD and NX Flexo screening technologies. The resultant data integral proof sets high standards in halftone inkjet proofing. Used in conjunction with the Epson Stylus Pro range of inkjet printers,

Star Proof gives users the ability to produce samples, prototypes and final proofs which are representative of the actual printed article. To fully compliment Epson ClearProof Film™ and Metallic film™, Star Proof also gives full control over white ink density and hue, allowing adjustments to be made simply and quickly. Star Proof delivers NX appeal.
Print Quest invest in high quality inkjet proofing.

London (England), 23/08/2010 – Established in 1996, Flexo platemakers Print Quest are no strangers to adopting the latest in technological developments. Just over 18 months ago, Print Quest became the first UK company to purchase the Kodak NX platemaking system.

Whilst the investment has resulted in new business and a higher quality plate being supplied to customers, it also meant that the all-important proofing stage was likely to come under scrutiny

“NX technology allows us to use a higher line screen which results in smoother gradations and the ability to hold a 0.4 % dot on the plate. Our previous digital proofing solution had difficulties in replicating this level of quality and it didn’t actually show the dot pattern, so we began investigating the proofing alternatives in the market.” explains David Jarvis, Managing Director at Print Quest.

The search proved to be a relatively short one. Early 2010, whilst attending a demonstration of Star Proof and the Epson Stylus Pro WT7900 at the Epson UK Headquarters, Jarvis was so convinced as to the solutions ability to reproduce the color, tone and dot quality required, an order was placed there and then.

“For Flexo, dot proofing is so important” claims Jarvis. “Before committing to plate, the customer needs to see how the tonal effect will be as it has a major impact on the finished product. As a consequence, we needed to improve the quality of our proof offering. Matching color on a proof nowadays should be a given, but we wanted to push the boundaries in terms of quality. With the WT device, we have done that. We can produce proofs on paper, film or metallic substrates and we can print a white ink. With Star Proof, we produce the highest quality dot proof available in the market”.

“We work with a variety of printers who print a wide range of products on a wide range of stocks. “ comments Jarvis. “Star Proof’s Flexo calibration tools have proven to be capable of fingerprinting the proof to the most challenging of press conditions. The effect on our business is significant. As the proof is representative of the press condition, we have reduced rejections, raised our service and gained new customers.”

Waldo invests in half-tone inkjet proofing with white ink
and Multi-substrate support.

First Star Proof/Epson Stylus Pro WT7900 install for the UK.

London (England), May 2010 – Waldo Ltd, a Flexo tradeshop based in Louth, Lincolnshire has become the first UK company to install the Star Proof and Epson Stylus Pro WT7900 proofing solution. Established in 1984, Waldo’s mission is to become a market leader in the supply of plates to the Flexible and Corrugated markets. They see innovation and investment in new technology as the key to future success in these industries.

Waldos’ team of experienced artworkers and originators are well versed in proofing technology. Having previously supplied Digital Cromalin and more recently Kodak Approval proofs, Waldo were always looking for a proofing system that would offer comparable quality but at a more cost effective price. When news of a new inkjet proofing solution aimed specifically at the Flexible packaging market reached Phil Walmsley, Director at Waldo, he was immediately interested.

“We had been aware of the dot proofing capabilities of Star Proof for some time. With the release of the new Epson device, now capable of printing white ink on clear and metallic substrates, the decision to make the investment was a no brainer!”

In June 2009 Waldo upgraded their digital platemaking system to an Esko 8050 CDI with high resolution Optics and HD screening. Star Proof is able to reproduce the same exceptional dot structure achieved when imaging with HD screening technology.

Comments Walmsley “ If we are producing high quality plates, we need the proof to replicate that same quality, right down to the dot. Star Proof also gives us the ability to match over 95% of the Pantone colour library and if we need to match a specific custom colour, the process is very straightforward – we can even produce a certified report detailing the match we are achieving for each individual spot colour in a job.”

The proofing system was supplied by Pomeroy Pressroom Products and integrated by Graphic Republik technicians, with Steve Donegan, Managing Director confident that this will be the first of many such installations in the UK.

“We knew a few months ago about the strengths of the Star Proof and Epson WT combination from installations we have in mainland Europe. The dot quality is superb, particularly when it comes to producing a proof at screen rulings of 150 LPI and above. The ability to reproduce accurate Spot colours on multiple substrates such as ClearProof media is also a great benefit to all involved in the packaging supply chain, from designers and artworkers through to repro houses and printers”.
